Integrative Harm-Reduction Training

Rethinking
Addiction Care
CIP currently offers coursework and training in Integrative Harm Reduction (IHR). Despite increasing empirical support, limited access to harm reduction treatment (HaRT) for addictive problems in the U.S. remains a major issue. Abstinence-focused treatment continues to dominate both the services available and the training offered to treatment providers.
IHR training views substance use as normal human behavior & focuses on the underlying issues that often drive addictive problems.

Training that Honors Client Autonomy
CIP offers specialized coursework in IHR, along with supervised clinical experience at the Center for Applied Psychological Services (CAPS). Students gain hands-on experience delivering low-cost, individualized harm reduction treatment (HaRT) to people struggling with substance use issues.
Through IHR training, students learn to integrate Motivational Interviewing (MI), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), third-wave approaches such as DBT and ACT, Psychodynamic modalities, and more. IHR trainees develop and refine skills to meet people where they are, align with self-determined goals, and help people build lives they find meaningful and rewarding.

Looking
Ahead

IHR training from CIP is positioned at the fulcrum of evidence-based practices & innovations that will improve treatment outcomes. Most treatment for addictive problems in the U.S. is not evidence based & is focused on achieving abstinence for life. While abstinence-only approaches are helpful to many, they are not helpful for many others and can even be harmful to some. CIP's IHR training aims to produce excellent clinicians well-versed in how to collaborate effectively to help people make the changes they want to make.
